Australia's captain Set to Play a Key Part in Iconic Rivalry

Test match action

The Australian skipper has claimed 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an average of 22.10.

Australia's chief selector the selector has confirmed that skipper Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming Ashes series.

Rumors had circulated that Cummins might miss the series due to a ongoing back issue that had not yet healed.

Earlier indications from the squad suggested no definitive call had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest set to start on 21 November in the WACA.

The selector shared that Cummins is "building up" and remained hopeful about the likelihood of participating.

"It's clear that the window is narrowing and there are permutations involved, aside from the physical problem, but other factors as well," Bailey remarked.

"The outlook is good. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a significant role. With luck from the opening match. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."

Past Concerns

The captain missed the white-ball matches against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals last month after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.

He has a history of recurring issues, with flare-ups in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of several home seasons in a limited period.

The bowler mentioned he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the contest.

Bailey noted that he did not know if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his recovery but admitted it was "pressing" for him to be fit for the opener.

Contingency Plans

Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will take over the captaincy.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from the ODI lineup for their ODI contests against the Asian giants as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.

The selector characterized it as a "small issue and mentioned that Green will play in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to be ready to bowl."

"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to take part for the initial game as an all-rounder," he elaborated.

"He was only going to play the initial matches regardless. The way he swings the bat in limited-overs, if it causes any delay for a short period, the choice was made to adopt a safer strategy."
