Individuals Stopping Anti-Obesity Medications Put On Pounds Four Times Faster Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study suggests that people who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional diet and exercise programs.

Published data in a leading health publication points out that while overweight individuals often shed about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Users using these treatments need to be cognizant of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of regain means a return to pre-treatment weight in about one and a half years.

Analyzing Treatments

The analysis, which examined dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with older methods.

The team note that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually have a less rapid creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Explaining the Rapid Regain

Doctors believe the mode of action of the injections accounts for the accelerated rebound.

GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating far more likely."

A Lifelong Condition?

The NHS advise the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians say that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the therapy should be considered ongoing.

This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "underscore the persistent nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Testimonies

Users who have stopped the medication report a intense return of cravings.

"It was like a trigger activating and you become extremely hungry," described one woman.

The struggle is worsened if individuals have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Significant Interest

Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.

  • Use is more common among women than men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and maintained weight loss relies on combined behavioural management.
