They're Applying to America What They Performed with Christianity

The Trump movement's most telling and distinctive moments – not its most important, nor most harsh, nor most hazardous, nor most senseless, but possibly its most revealing – came earlier this autumn. During the period of several weeks, the US president started showing the public his intentions for a gilded ballroom two times larger than the White House and subsequently started independently demolishing the East Wing portion to construct it.

He has performed deeds ten thousand times worse – the existing assessment of deaths resulting from his reductions to USAID amounts to 600,000 and rising, and presently a study projected his fossil fuel policies would kill another 1.3 million. But nothing as definitional. No other president would have attempted – genuinely, no other president would have conceived – solo demolishing large sections of the presidential residence in order to erect a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the active collaboration of multiple America's wealthiest, nearly all of which maintain dealings with public institutions.

We moved from 'the meek shall inherit the planet' into 'the meek shall die from cholera'

As confusing as it is to watch the leader try to upend the traditional concept about democracy and exchange it with its complete opposite, there exists a significant segment of Americans who wouldn't consider it entirely new. That is those of us – among senior generations almost a majority – who were raised as mainline Protestant Christians.

We have witnessed across decades as rightwing evangelical churches transformed the Christ we learned about into exactly the opposite of our perception of his character. Essentially, they transformed an image of love into an icon of hate who endorses exactly the harshness that he criticized in scripture; this has happened more gradually, over decades as opposed to months, but it is nonetheless disturbing through similar means, a disorienting gut punch for numerous individuals.

A Toxic Christianity Establishes Itself

Hence I shall explain the Christ from my upbringing, as conceptually the Savior is the core of Christian religion, and given that the quickly increasing segment within America might have little sense of him as they consider themselves atheists or uncertain individuals or religiously unaffiliated. I take no issue with these various perspectives, nor with any other faith; but I do think that exist valuable insights of substantial value in the Christian story.

It is emphatically not the story of a mighty king arising; rather, an infant arrives to displaced parents in a garage, who are forced to hastily depart to another nation to evade covert authorities. The child matures in humble circumstances, a laboring woodworker; his doctrine focuses on affection for fellow humans, particularly for the impoverished – not simply tender feelings, but tangible care, demonstrated through nourishing and protecting. Christ's response to violence is to present the other cheek – not as a gesture of compliant endurance, but as a means to instruct the assailant; his approach to wrongdoing is that if someone steals your outer garment you must offer them your pullover as well.

The apparent and straightforward fact that the Jesus in biblical accounts calls for a kind of profound affection concentrated on the poor is what has always made Christian religion rather a scandalous religion: appealing to the general public, but because of its intrinsic extremism requiring to be controlled. During the 1950s it was restrained via weakening – Protestant Christianity was so widespread that it essentially blessed current circumstances.

A Battle for the Best of Us

So I have been heartened to see the determined opposition regarding Trump emerge over the last twelve months. It has served as substantial consolation to assist in constructing the movement that has demonstrated publicly through repeated demonstrations, and appears to have motivated citizens to participate in significant amounts during minor elections. We must have to persist with it, and through comparable resolve, displaying national flags during all protests and calls to the highest qualities in US history.

We're going to be asked ... regarding how you welcomed the stranger? Did you welcome them and receive them or not?

America is best defended, essentially, by reference to the best in US heritage, similar to Christianity is most protected by reference to elements that cause it to be distinctive and wonderful, which is the example of Jesus. In neither case does it mean pretending the most damaging about the nation and Christian faith did not happen; it signifies both modesty and faith, a mixture that serious national faithful should embrace.
